Myofascial release (MFR) uses slow, sustained pressure and gentle stretching rather than fast strokes or forceful kneading. The therapist follows the tissue and may work on the painful area or related regions affecting movement. MFR is slower and more focused than traditional massage.
The practitioner may assess posture, movement, and restrictions; depending on the treatment area, you may remain clothed or be appropriately draped. Fascia is the connective-tissue network that supports muscles, bones, nerves, and other structures. Repetitive activity, injury, surgery, prolonged positioning, or limited movement can cause tenderness, stiffness, or restriction.
MFR may help with tenderness, guarding, or restricted movement from work, activity, surgery, injury, or an accident. It is especially suited to clients addressing a specific restriction, such as a hip or shoulder.
